History of Wichita Falls

A Brief History of Wichita Falls

Image via Flickr by roy.luck | Licensed by CC BY 2.0 Did you know Wichita Falls, Texas, inspired the 1940 movie ''Boom Town'' starring Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy? In fact, the city's rich history is so colorful it could rival the antics of any frontier town from a famous Hollywood movie. Flashback to the late 1800s and the plot of land just shy of the 100th meridian was home to nothing more than washed-out shanties and dusty farmland. That is until the railroad began laying tracks and everything changed. Today, Wichita Falls is a thriving market center with a population of more than 100,000. On top of that, the vibrant city is located just miles from Sheppard Air Force Base, which boasts the largest U.S. Air Force technical training wing as well as the multinational Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program (ENJJPT). So how did Wichita Falls go from a two-bit town to the bustling business hub and military center it is today? Take a journey back in time to learn more about the colorful history of Wichita Falls. Native Americans Settle the Area In the mid-1700s, Caddoan Native Americans migrated to the land now known as Wichita County from present-day Kansas and Nebraska. They began to establish communities in the area and farm the land. However, the Caddoans often found themselves in heated conflicts with Apache and Comanche tribes who had previously claimed the land as their own. Settlers typically avoided the area as a result. After federal troops forced Native Americans onto reserve lands north of the Red River around the mid-1800s, others began to explore the area. Early Pioneers Arrive Between the late 1700s and mid-1800s, European explorers visited the area that now makes up Wichita County. Athanase de Mézières, Pedro Vial, and José Mares were some of the first people to leave their mark on the land. By the 1830s, soldiers who fought in the Texas Revolution began receiving land grants to permanently settle in the area. However, it wasn't until 1855 that someone actually did. Mabel Gilbert built a house on a bluff above the Red River just 10 miles north of present-day Wichita Falls. Three years later, the Texas government created Wichita County, but it wasn't until the 1870s that most pioneers began to arrive. A Legend Begins According to legend, John A. Scott won the deed to the plot of land where Wichita Falls now sits during a poker game in 1837. The truth is that he purchased the land and promptly forgot about it. It wasn't until after he died that his heirs discovered the deed and decided to dig a bit deeper. They hired M. W. Seeley to come up with a plan for developing a city in the area. The year was 1876, and a small community had already started to form. Finally, in September 1882, Wichita Falls was officially founded with the arrival of the first Fort Worth and Denver City Railway train. At the time, it was nothing more than a shantytown. Once the railroad extended its lines into the area, it became easier for cattle ranchers and corn farmers to get their goods to market. People soon flocked to the area, and the city began growing over the next several decades. You'll find well-preserved reminders of the past all over Wichita Falls. The Hamilton Building and La Salle Crossing Apartments are just a few of the historic buildings that remain from this time. Kemp and Kell Take Charge Joseph A. Kemp and his brother-in-law, Frank Kell, were largely responsible for putting Wichita Falls on the map. Kemp arrived in 1883 and opened a general store. Kell moved to the area about 13 years later after purchasing the Wichita Valley Mills Company, which is now known as Attebury Grain. Between 1884 and 1911, they worked tirelessly to promote the growth of their city. Most notably, they brought three more rail lines into the fold. Now, ranchers could ship their goods to Fort Worth and other outlets across the nation. It wasn't long before the city began to grow. Thanks to the efforts of Kemp and Kell, Wichita Falls quickly became a major transportation and distribution center for the entire region. The Route Building at 503 Eighth Street stands today as a reminder of the railroad's influence on the early beginnings of Wichita Falls. Originally constructed in 1909 by Kemp and Kell to house their offices, the building also served as a rail depot. Kemp and Kell had their hands in all kinds of businesses, from food processing to retail and banking to oil. Undoubtedly, Wichita Falls wouldn't be the flourishing center it is today without their contributions. Other reminders of Kemp and Kell's legacy include the Kell House Museum, the Kemp Center for the Arts, which was originally a public library Kemp bought for his wife as a Christmas gift, and the Kemp-Kell Building, which is now known as the Holt Hotel. Texas Tea Leads to a Boom After the discovery of oil in nearby Burkburnett, Texas, in 1918, Wichita Falls exploded with activity. People hungry to get rich off Texas tea quickly made their way to Wichita Falls. Businesses popped up overnight as a way to support the fast-growing population. For years to come, oil played a major role in the city's success. Key oil producers included the companies now known as Texaco, Gulf, and Mobile Oil. Today, you can learn more about the rich history of Wichita Falls with a visit to one of the many historic museums, neighborhoods, and sites found all over the city. One of the most popular sites includes the former City National Bank where a bank robbery once took place. Another is the farmers market. It serves as a modern adaptation of the Union Station building that once stood in the same spot. At Herb Easley Chevrolet, we love learning about the vibrant past of Wichita Falls and wanted to share some of our knowledge with you. Did you find our profile on this historic city interesting? Did we miss any details — a legendary tale locals love to tell about a colorful character or a favorite building? If we did, let us know! Drop us a line, and we'll be sure to add it to our list.

4 Reasons Why Driving is the Perfect Stress Reliever

Here at Herb Easley Chevrolet, we know that times have been incredibly difficult. Stressors appear to be attacking you from all sides these days. Bad news seems to develop at lightning speeds, working from home has turned from a dream into a nightmare and there does not seem to be an escape from it all. Image via Flickr by Rob Olivera | Licensed by CC BY 2.0 When negative thoughts feel as if they are bearing down on you, the best thing you can do is break free of them. Cruising along the road can help you relax and forget about — or at least put into perspective — the potholes that life's highway has thrown at you. Below, you will find out exactly how hopping behind the wheel for a ride down some lazy roads can help you maintain control over your stress levels. Solitude On occasion, you may find that spending time by yourself can prove to be an excellent answer to dealing with the pressures that have been created by your employer or even by your family. Getting some alone time can do wonders for your mental health, especially if you live in a crowded area where it can be difficult to ever be actually alone. Sliding into the driver's seat of a new car and starting the engine allows you to escape the hubbub of the world around you and lets you focus on the inner workings of your self without distraction. Driving by yourself lets you focus solely on the task at hand — driving. This can provide you with some much needed distance from the stressors of work, family, etc. Taking some time to yourself also comes with a wealth of benefits. Thomas Oppong writes that researchers have discovered that solitude allows you boost your creativity as your mind can be released from weight of your stressors and be free to play with new ideas. This may surprise you but taking some time to yourself can also improve your relationship with family and friends. According to Dr. Kristina M. Scharp's 2019 article in Psychology Today, when you are alone, you can improve upon your listening practices. Going for a drive alone out of town for a little while is a fantastic strategy for you to achieve some internal quiet and peace. Mindfulness Mindfulness is a term that has become very popular to throw around as of late, but let's talk about what this term actually means for you. When you practice mindfulness, you are engaging in a type of meditation. This practice requires you to concentrate on the present moment and on your immediate surroundings. This type of medication is designed to help you become more attuned with your innermost thoughts and emotions so you can enter a state of relaxation. This type of meditation is best conducted somewhere quiet and, ideally, by yourself. Your car can be the perfect setting to practice mindfulness. Now, just because you are engaging in meditation doesn't mean you should close your eyes while you are on the road. Remember, you are trying to pay attention to what's happening in the moment. Next time you are driving, set a time limit and notice your body. Feel the sensation of your breath moving in and out of your lungs. Focus on where you are, which roads you are driving on, but don't feel bad if your thoughts wander. Mindfulness can take many forms, like intentional breathing or practicing gratitude. New Scenery If you are going through an acutely stressful time at work or at home, getting out for a change of scenery can serve as a welcome respite. Driving away from the environment that is causing you stress can give you the literal and figurative space you may need. Don't think of this tactic as running away from the problem. Going on a drive lets you create some much needed temporary distance so you can have a quiet moment to think. The scenery you may find while out on the open road can provide a refreshing change and help you mull over the problem more productively. The next time you find yourself overwhelmed try to take a slow drive down some country roads, past buildings you find inspiring, or even visit a part of town you are not all that familiar with yet. No Phone One of the best reasons to hop in your car when you are stressed is because you won't be tempted to check your smartphone. It's become common knowledge that our phones, as handy as they are, can also be conduits for stress. Quite a few of us are obsessive in checking our social media and work emails. It's become nearly impossible to entirely disconnect from work and immediate responses are almost expected by our friends and family. Smartphones have done a lot of good but it's important to remember that they are tools under our control — not the other way around. Some time away from your phone can prove to be incredibly helpful for your mental health. Before you start your car, turn your phone on to "Do Not Disturb" mode so you won't hear the constant notification ‘pings' of new texts or social media updates. We at Herb Easley Chevrolet want to remind you that it's incredibly important that you remember to practice safe driving techniques. You must be alert at all times, even if you are cruising down a beautiful, winding country road. Now that you have learned how the simple act of driving can serve as a way to help you unwind, you may be excited to try it for yourself. Taking some alone time in your car can provide extraordinary benefits for your mental health by letting you pay attention to what you are feeling inside as well as focusing on the present moment you find yourself in. If you are ready to hit the open road in search of inner peace, drop us a line. We at Herb Easley Chevrolet look forward to helping you.

Your truck has to do the job, whether you're towing a work trailer to job sites or taking your fishing boat to your favorite spot in the mountains. The Silverado's ability to do that and so much more is why many people choose a Silverado over the competition. Let's take a closer look at the Silverado towing capacity and different trims to help you decide which model is right for you. Silverado Towing Capacity by Engine A truck's towing capacity results from many different factors like the high-strength fully boxed steel frame, a capable transmission, advanced towing packages, and a rear differential to handle the torque. Perhaps the most significant factor is the engine which provides the torque to tow. The Silverado 1500 features five engine options, each with its unique capabilities and strengths. 4.3-Liter EcoTec 3 V-6 Chevy offers a 4.3-liter EcoTec 3 V-6 engine with direct injection and Active Fuel Management technology standard in the WT, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss trims. This engine pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission to deliver a respectable 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. Chevy mates this engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission to give you 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain tows up to 9,300 pounds with a 2,060-pound payload capacity. 5.3-Liter EcoTec 3 V-8 Two 5.3-liter EcoTec 3 V-8 engines are available, one with Active Fuel Management (AFM) technology and the other with Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) technology. The DFM version LT Trail Boss, LTZ, and High Country models and available on the LT and RST trims. The AFM engine is only available on the WT, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss. The AFM mates with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the DFM mates with an eight-speed automatic. If you choose the LT Trail Boss or the High Country 4x4, you'll get an upgraded 10-speed automatic transmission. Both get impressive power numbers coming in at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain can tow up to 9,400 pounds and haul 2,060 pounds with the standard setup or tow 11,100 pounds and haul 2,170 pounds by adding the Max Trailering Package. 6.2-Liter V-8 A 6.2-liter V-8 engine with direct injection and DFM technology is available on the High Country, LTZ, LT Trail Boss, RST, and Custom Trail Boss trims. Chevy mates this to its 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain gets a robust 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. It can tow up to 9,300 pounds and haul 1,690 pounds with the basic setup. If you add the Max Trailering Package, those numbers jump to 13,300 pounds and 2,090 pounds, respectively. Duramax 3.0-Liter Turbo-Diesel The Duramax turbo-diesel engine is available on the Lt, RST, LTZ, and High Country trim and offers the perfect blend of power and efficiency. A 10-speed automatic transmission completes this powertrain to deliver 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque and tows up to 9,500 pounds. 6.6-Liter V-8 The Silverado 2500 HD trim comes with a 6.6-liter V-8 engine with direct injection and variable valve timing. Chevy links this engine with a six-speed automatic transmission to deliver 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. As a result, it tows up to 17,370 pounds. Duramax 6.6-liter Turbo-Diesel The Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel engine with an air induction system and a variable geometry turbocharger is available on the Silverado 2500 HD trim. This engine is paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission and gets 445 horsepower and a monstrous 910 pound-feet of torque. With a max towing capacity of up to 36,000 pounds, there aren't many jobs this powertrain can't handle. Truck and Trailer Camera System The Silverado 1500 and 2500 offer an advanced camera system that uses eight cameras to provide 15 unique views around your truck and trailer. Four of these views focus on the hitch alone. The Surround View provides a top-down bird's eye view of the truck and trailer hitch. The Hitch View gives you a close-up of the receiver and hitch to help guide you. A Rear Top-Down View shows you how much clearance you have around your truck. The unique Bed View allows you to check on cargo or hook up a gooseneck trailer. New in 2021 is a Bed Zoom and Bed Hitch Guidance views. Six views focus on driving views like the innovative Transparent Trailer view that lets you virtually see the following vehicles through the trailer. A Pic-In-Pic View combines the rear side view and rear trailer view, one inside the other like your picture-in-picture feature on your television. A dual-function rearview mirror doubles as both a reflective mirror and a live video feed from behind your truck. You also get five parking views that make parking easier. Intelligent Trailer Technology The Silverado offers an advanced trailering system that allows you to store multiple trailer configurations. The features include pre-departure checklists, trailer lighting diagnostics, and tire pressure information. A trailer sway control system, hill start assist, and auto grade braking helps make towing more manageable and safer.  You get new tech like an electric parking brake hookup assist, trailer theft alert, and brake gain memory on the integrated brake controller. An available 3.0-liter turbodiesel-six provides 277 horsepower and an impressive 460 pound-feet of torque. Its power and torque are transferred to the ground by a 10-speed automatic transmission. With this combination, you can tow 9,500 pounds. It's the most efficient powertrain for the Silverado 1500. The estimated fuel mileage for the turbodiesel is 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway for two-wheel drive models. Four-wheel-drive models get 22 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The 5.3-liter V-8, which generates 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, is the most common engine for the 2021 Silverado 1500. You can tow up to 10,000 pounds with this engine, which has the option of a six-speed, eight-speed, or 10-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel-drive models with the 5.3-liter only come with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This engine is equipped with either active fuel management technology or dynamic fuel management technology. If power is what you need, the 6.2-liter V-8 that makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque can tow up to 11,900 pounds. It's only available with a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. When you get the four-wheel drive Silverado 1500 RST with double cab and standard bed, equipped with 20-inch wheels and the max trailering package, you can tow up to 13,300 pounds. Advanced Towing Tech Towing with the 2021 Silverado 1500 is easier than ever before, with an array of advanced towing technology to help you stay safe as you tow your boat, camper, or trailer. Eight available cameras can provide you with 15 different views, keeping you informed of your surroundings. The cameras provide four available views: Hitch View: Helps you with alignment when hitching up with a close-up view of the receiver hitch. Surround View: Gives you a bird's-eye view of your truck's surroundings. Rear Top-Down View: This Lets you see the clearance between your truck bed and nearby objects. Bed View: Used for checking on cargo and hitching-up a fifth-wheel or gooseneck. Bed Hitch Guidance and Cargo Bed Zoom are new features for the 2021 model year. Six available driving views give you the ability to see what's ahead and behind as you're towing. These views help you stay informed of pedestrians, objects, and vehicles around your truck and trailer. Here's a brief explanation of the six driving views: Transparent Trailer: Compatible trailers enable you to see through the trailer with a virtual image. Front Camera View: When making tight maneuvers and parking, this view shows you what's directly in front of the truck. Pic-In-Pic Side View: Combines the Rear Trailer View and the Rear Side View and requires the available Chevrolet Accessory Camera. Rear Camera Mirror: This available rearview mirror gives you a less-obstructed and broader field of view. The mirror is dual-function and camera-based. Rear Trailer View: With a compatible trailer, the Chevrolet Accessory Camera gives you a view of objects behind the trailer. Your path is also outlined with a Trailer Angle Indicator and Trailer Guidelines. Another set of guidelines uses steering inputs to show where the trailer will go. Inside Trailer View: The available Chevrolet Accessory Camera can be installed inside your trailer, giving you a view of the cargo or contents. Parking a truck and trailer can be intimidating, but with five available parking views, the Silverado 1500 will help alleviate some of the pressure. Here are the five available parking views: Rear Camera View: Gives you a view behind the truck with guidelines that help you with parking. Rear Side View: Uses a split-screen to show you a line of sight down both sides of the truck and trailer. Rear Side View (Turn Signal Activated): When towing a compatible trailer, a full-screen view down either side of the truck and trailer is shown when the turn signal is activated. Bowl View: This is a 3D surround view facing the rear, helping with low-speed backing maneuvers. Front Side View: This view shows you the front tires' position during tight maneuvers and parking. Other impressive towing tech includes an available in-vehicle trailering app detailing customized trailer profiles, trailer lighting diagnostics, and pre-departure checklists. The in-vehicle app also monitors the temperature and air pressure of the trailer's tires. The Tow/Haul Reminder detects when your truck is connected to a trailer and will remind you to engage the Tow/Haul mode. When traveling in reverse with Hitch View active, the Silverado 1500's electric parking brake automatically engages when you shift to park to mitigate vehicle roll. Trailer security is covered by the Trailer Theft Alert system, which sounds the horn and flashes the lights if your trailer is disconnected while your vehicle is parked. These are just a few of the available trailering technology features available for the 2021 Silverado 1500. Safety Features Available safety features you'll find in the 2021 Silverado 1500 include automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, and lane change alert with side blind-zone alert. If you have young drivers, the available Teen Driver safety system enables you to set limitations and monitor their driving habits. This feature helps you foster responsible drivers. The Silverado 1500 helps keep you and your passengers safe whether you're working or heading out of town on vacation. All these features and more can be found in the 2021 Silverado 1500. Lucy Park Wichita Falls, TX

Plan Your Day in Lucy Park

Lucy Park, for example, is one of the town's most popular places to enjoy the fresh air, either alone or with loved ones. The 176-acre park set in a riverbed was founded in the 1960s and named after Mrs. Lucy O. Saunders, a famed female oil operator. Here at Herb Easley Chevrolet, we've compiled some of the most exciting things to do and see in Lucy Park. Swim and Sunbathe If you love swimming, you'll have a great day in the water at Lucy Park. The large public swimming pool provides the perfect place to cool off from June to August. The pool's facilities are well-maintained, and lifeguards are on duty to keep swimmers of all experience levels safe. Simply bring appropriate swimming attire and some sunscreen to relax on a hot afternoon in the Texas sun. During the summer, the pool is open from noon to 6 p.m. seven days a week and costs $3 for adults and $2 for minors. Visit The Falls The man-made waterfall at Lucy Park paints a heavenly scene. The 54-foot cascade was constructed in 1987 on the Wichita River. To visit The Falls, park in the designated area and walk or ride your bike one mile down a well-paved path. The beautifully landscaped area offers plenty of shade, even on hot days. The Lucy Park waterfall is a popular spot for photo shoots, so bring your camera if you want to capture memorable moments. If you're lucky, you might spot turtles popping their heads above the water. Play Disc Golf Lucy Park is home to an 18-hole disc golf course that winds through green spaces and tree clusters throughout the grounds. Bring your own Frisbees and a group of friends to try your skills at this fun golf-inspired game on a nice day. All you have to do is drive, chip, and putt your way to each "hole." As with golf, the player with the lowest total score at the end of play wins. Picnic or Party at the Shelter Two spacious shelters and one cabin are available if you want to enjoy a picnic or host a special event at the park. One shelter fits 20 tables and can hold approximately 120 people. The other features 14 tables and can seat up to 84 people. A log cabin for special events holds 55 people. You can reserve any of the three structures for meetings, parties, and family picnics, depending on the size of your entourage. Rent the large shelter for four hours for only $15. You'll also have access to the restrooms, playgrounds, and ball courts nearby. If you want to grill out for your picnic in the park, claim one of the 34 barbecue grills around the property. Bring a plate of burgers back to your shelter, or find a quiet spot under a tree to enjoy an intimate meal. Go for a Hike Lucy Park is an excellent place to go for a leisurely hike, no matter your fitness level. The main trail is a 2-mile paved loop around the park. Numerous shorter paths branch off from this main one and take hikers, walkers, and joggers past attractions such as the Japanese pagoda and the suspension bridge over the river. A half-mile dirt trail takes visitors to The Falls. Leashed dogs are allowed on all park trails, so let your pooch get some exercise, as well. Play Volleyball If you want to get in on some competitive fun, challenge your friends to a game of volleyball. Lucy Park has three volleyball courts for visitors to play on: one concrete and two sand. Most of the volleyball tournaments in Wichita Falls take place here, so you might find yourself observing an exciting match rather than playing one. When the courts are empty, however, they're fair game. Go for a Bike Ride Lucy Park's 2-plus miles of paved paths are open to cyclists, too. The beginner-friendly trails are perfect for families and casual bike rides. If you're committed to a longer ride, however, the park is the launching point for the city's Circle Trail system. The rail-trail includes more than 20 miles of pristine 10-foot-wide bike paths. You'll share Lucy Park and Circle Trail's paths with walkers, joggers, and rollerbladers, but you won't encounter any motorized vehicles, making these routes safe cycling options. Watch the Birds If you are a bird-watching enthusiast, Lucy Park doesn't disappoint. The nearby Wichita River and centrally located pond provide a natural atmosphere and habitat for species such as geese, ducks, and waterfowl. You can sit on the benches near the pond or walk around to spot the birds in their hideouts. You can also visit the Nature Center to look for native species such as blue jays, cardinals, mockingbirds, woodpeckers, robins, red-winged blackbirds and wrens. Visit the Nature Center If you want to get even closer to nature, visit the River Bend Nature Center, which covers 15 acres of Lucy Park right along 3rd Street. Its attractions include the Bryant Edwards Learning Center, which has live exhibits showcasing amphibians, insects, and more; the 7,000-square-foot glass Ruby N. Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory; and Peyton's Place butterfly enclosure. Nature trails take visitors through the Center's 15 acres of wetlands and bottomland forest, where you might spy wildlife such as raccoons and foxes. The Nature Center makes for a fantastic family outing. If you have kids, stop by the Children's Garden to admire the pond and flowers and even dig for dinosaur bones. Admission costs $6 for adults and $5 for children, and the facility is open daily. Now you know all about Herb Easley Chevrolet's favorite things to do and see at Lucy Park in Wichita Falls.
